NASA Super Unlimited Sportscar:
Just a quick update on this weekend. Tim and I sat out the racing while Jim
did the Super Unlimited NASA race in the #47 RX7. Bill Blauvelt also used the
car for the Driving Concepts Racing School. On Saturday, Jim finished 2nd in
class (about 4th overall) behind Carol's World Challenge Ferrari F355 F1.
On Sunday, Bill started last and was leading the School 10 lap race when he
was randomly black flagged (they test the drivers to see if they're paying
attention). Meanwhile, Matt Spencer took the RX7 through HPDE3 Hot Lapping.
In the race, Jim missed a shift on the green flag (went to 5th instead of
3rd) and fell back to last place. A lap later, he drove off Turn 1 and fell
back further, finally finishing on the lead lap but down the field.
All in all, a great weekend with no problems. The car ran flawlessly except
for a minor starting issue and a loose exhaust at the end of the day on
Sunday.
American Stockcar Challenge:
Congratulations to Ken Stinnett for winning both days. Great driving
everybody! No pictures this time around, I broke my digital camera. The ASC
cars ran in a mixed field with the GTA cars. The staggered start also
included American Iron/AIX and CMC cars.
The ASC contingent included Ken Stinnett, Dave Brown, Ed Ochylski in his new
car, Dave Arnheiter, Jerry Brown, and Justin Sallows in ASC-X (That's what we
decided to designate unofficially for a non-legal car). I hope I didn't miss
anybody...
On Saturday, the racing was clean with Stinnett taking the win and Justin
taking 2nd (he later voluntarily returned his trophy). I honestly can't
remember who took 3rd (forgive me whoever you are). I believe it was DB who
was dicing hard with some GTA cars. Justin was enjoying his hp advantage and
spent most of the race dicing with Dave Arnheiter. Ed was blazingly fast in
his new car... the "Players Special". Jerry didn't run because of a battery
cable and rearend problem... no it wasn't the Mexican food!
On Sunday, the GTA cars jumped out in the lead early with their hp advantage.
But after a few laps, Ken reeled all but 2 back in. Then the 2 lead GTA cars
tangled into Turn 1 sending one of them back into the pits. This placed Ken
in 2nd overall. He was closing that gap when he got a black flag for passing
under yellow. But even after pulling in for his Stop & Go, he maintained his
ASC lead but lost significant ground on the lead GTA car. Again I forget who
was 2nd... sorry guys. Most of the ASC cars were mixing it up with the GTA
cars and despite the hp disadvantage, were running high in the field.
Arnheiter did have a minor off track excursion when his control arm broke.
After the race, Ken went to protest the yellow flag and I haven't heard the
outcome yet.... but I translated that "thumbs up" (as he was walked by with
an official) as a good sign. Interestingly, I noticed that the ASC cars were
running pretty clean while the GTA cars were having problems with over
aggressive driving. Fast lap of the weekend was a low 1:25 set by GTA. Ken
qualified at 1:26 but ran a 1:25:8 in the race. All those V8's out there made
some incredible sounds. People were using traffic (AI & CMC cars) to their
advantage and it all made for an exciting race. Justin broke the steering
rack housing in practice so we sat out the race to prevent further damage.
