ASC & ProTrucks at Buttonwillow Raceway

What a great show everybody put on this weekend. The ProTruck guys were spectacular as well and combining ASC with PT was a great formula.
The ProTrucks are tube framed chassis racers also powered by GM ZZ4 engines and ride on stickier Hoosier race tires. They have slightly shorter wheelbases and are lighter than ASC cars.

The start of Saturday's race was great, Dave Brown and one of the ProTruck drivers (Donn Cross?) ran side by side for the first half lap, neither willing to give up. Then Dave went flat out entering Taladega, the truck driver dropped in behind him. From that point, Dave simply checked out on the field and ran out front the entire race. But behind him, Jim Swartzbaugh and Donn Cross battled for the entire race in second place. Mike Tolman, who qualified at the front, had an early spin which dusted his windshield (as well as his face!) and continued blindly through the race. ASC newcomer Steve Rueshenberg finished 2nd in ASC and 4th overall.
After the race, he excitedly told me that he had so much fun that he's inviting several friends from the Southwest Tour to come run ASC. Mark Cross (PT) and Dave Arnheiter (ASC) had a great battle and each finished 3rd in their respective classes with Cross taking 5th overall. This was definately the best show of the weekend based on the amount of yelling and cheering from the balcony from the spectators. Ironically, post race tech (and dyno test) revealed that Dave's ASC car probably put out the least horsepower in the field, another testament to his driving ability.

On Sunday, Swartzbaugh (PT) and Donn Cross (PT) qualified on the front row with Mike Tolman in 3rd (ASC pole). At the drop of the green flag, Mike charged hard and battled with the trucks until he spun at Turn 2. Dave Brown inherited the ASC pole and stayed there until the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Dave Arnheiter (ASC) had been battling with Ron Swartzbaugh (PT) and didn't notice the hard charging Tolman coming up from behind. With only a few laps left in the race, Tolman charged by Arnheiter to take 3rd in ASC. Once again, all the drivers had nothing but great things to say about the formula of running PT with ASC. The crowd certainly enjoyed it judging by the amount of cheering once again.

Lets hope that NASA adopts this fomula more in the future. RealRide/Pennyweb
